Hello my name is Todd Balkema, I’m an elder law attorney with the Jordan Balkema Elder Law Center servicing families in the
northern michigan area.
A commonly asked question in my office byfamily members is how are we going to afford a loved one’s long-term care expenses whether we’re in an assisted living facility at home or in a nursing home?
Medicaid is a governmental program that will assist family members in paying for a loved ones long-term care expenses.
Medicaid has certain requirements that have to be met for an individual to be able to receive those benefits. Those requirements are both medical and financial. For the financial tests there is an income test and an asset test. An individual can maintain certain assets and still qualify for medicaid benefits.
Those assets are: two thousand dollars in cash, a home, a car, and a pre-paid funeral contract.
As for the medical tests, an individual must have difficulty in performing certain activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing, feeding, and medicating themselves.
The laws governing the medicaid program differ if you’re a single person or married couple and are ever-changing. If you or your family are attempting to manage the medicaid maze, please call our office for one hour free consultation.
I look forward to assisting your family.
